Overview

The threat of global warming and the dire requirement for Sustainable Development has triggered the need to address climate change at all levels. Countries across the globe have come up with various mechanisms to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Businesses have realized that addressing climate change helps understand the risks and opportunities that it poses to their operations.

MSPL Limited, part of the Baldota Group of Companies, has been a forerunner in addressing Climate Change. The Group ventured into its first Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project with its investment in 125 MW green wind energy in 2006.

To establish accountability for its climate change policies and carbon emissions from its operations, MSPL Limited has undertaken a formal greenhouse gas accounting exercise using the Green House Gases (GHG) Protocol.

We at Baldota have adopted several GHG Protocol tenets in ensuring accountability for the GHG emissions we produce during our operations. Here is the run-down:

Control approach: Where we account for 100 per cent of the GHG emissions from operations over which we have control.

Operational control: Where we or one of our subsidiaries has the full authority to introduce and implement GHG reduction by altering operational policies

Scope 1 emissions: Direct GHG emissions and emissions that occur from sources that are owned or controlled by us are monitored and controlled

Scope 2 emissions: Electricity indirect GHG emissions and emissions that occur from the generation of purchased electricity consumed by us are accounted for, and controlled

Way Forward

That said, we have articulated the vision for the future in reduction of harm to the environment either through GHG emissions or otherwise. In this endeavour we have detailed the following policies that we pledge to follow to the letter:

  • Capacity building & adhering to global benchmarks
  • Incorporating climate change, clean energy, energy efficiency policies / targets as part of overall sustainability strategy
  • Evaluation of offset options / renewable energy investments
  • Management systems / roles and responsibilities to be designated for the use of the GHG accounting manual for a assessment.
  • Implement energy audit observations / recommendations and reduce minimum 2% of CO2 emission each year
  • Third party assurance and disclosure/communication and branding
