The first step towards community environment management is creating awareness that also brings in a sense of responsibility. We continue to broadcast ‘Hasire Usiru’, a weekly entertainment programme on All India Radio, Hosapete, with an aim to educate and encourage young minds about various topics like environment protection, wildlife conservation, energy & resource conservation and global warming.
At Baldota, training on environmental awareness and competency, in line with ISO 14001, safe work practices & housekeeping are part of the curriculum. Environment Management System classes are conducted in English as well as in the local language – Kannada. The employees are also trained on the ISO 9001, Quality Management System and OHSAS 18001, Occupational Health and Safety Management System.
To nurture awareness and the need for environmental conservation amongst the mining units in India, we have instituted the “Abheraj Baldota Environment Awarded” through the Federation of Indian Mineral Industries (FIMI), New Delhi. The citation recognizes exceptional environmental efforts made throughout India.
Over the years, we have celebrated “World Environment Day” by involving school children in plantation drives. To increase awareness about the importance of environment among the children, we also screen environment related films in the schools.
We also support the activities of the Society for Wildlife and Nature (SWaN) for creating awareness among the students, document the birds of Ballari and North Karnataka, protect migratory birds and breeding birds at T.B. Dam, and campaign against ritual hunting of the Great Indian Bustard. We continued our support by forming nature clubs in Hosapete and Koppal taluks, to create awareness about wildlife, and preserve nature and natural habitats.
